What Are Liver Cysts?

A liver cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in the liver. These cysts are usually benign (non-cancerous) and often do not cause any symptoms. They are typically discovered during imaging tests, like an ultrasound or CT scan, performed for other reasons.

Types of Liver Cysts
  • • Simple Cysts: The most common type, generally harmless and asymptomatic.
  • • Polycystic Liver Disease (PLD): A genetic condition where multiple cysts develop in the liver.
  • • Hydatid Cysts: Caused by a parasitic infection, more common in certain regions.

Symptoms Most liver cysts do not cause symptoms. However, if a cyst becomes large, it may lead to:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • A feeling of fullness or bloating
  • Nausea

Diagnosis Liver cysts are usually diagnosed through imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. These tests help determine the size and nature of the cyst.

Treatment

  • Observation: Many liver cysts require no treatment and are simply monitored over time.
  • Aspiration: For symptomatic cysts, fluid can be drained using a needle.
  • Surgery: Large or problematic cysts may need to be surgically removed.

Prognosis The prognosis for liver cysts is generally good, especially for simple cysts. Most people with liver cysts lead normal, healthy lives without needing any treatment.
