What are esophageal varices?

Abnormal, enlarged tortuous veins around the lower end of esophagus are called esophageal varices. These most commonly occur in the background of a failing liver.

What are the common complaints?

Varices commonly present with

  • 1. Blood in vomiting
  • 2. Black colored stools
  • 3. Esophageal discomfort
  • 4. Difficulty in swallowing
How are Varices diagnosed?

Endoscopy is the choice of investigation for the esophageal varices. It can also be seen on a contrast enhanced CT scan.

What are treatment options for varices?
